Assistant Professor Digital Media Arts and Technology
The Department of Telecommunication at Michigan State University has an
opening for a creative and dynamic Assistant Professor of Telecommunication
in Digital Media Arts. We seek the best applicant and can be flexible with
position parameters.
Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities include introductory and
advanced courses in multimedia production, digital media arts,
telecommunication technology, virtual environment design, and/or
human-computer interaction.
The candidate will be expected to gain national visibility through juried
multimedia designs and/or published research and to establish relationships
with the digital media arts industry. Design and research in the area of
digital media arts can take many perspectives including -- but not
restricted to -- computer graphics, programming, media aesthetics,
information design, human-computer interaction, technology studies, cultural
studies, and communication science.
Qualifications: Evidence of creative work and/or scholarly research related
to digital media arts and technology. A portfolio demonstrating solid
experience in interactive multimedia design is essential, as is an
understanding of the ongoing convergence between new media and traditional
media. The candidate should demonstrate original creative application of
some combination of 2D and 3D computer graphics, multimedia authoring tools,
WWW design, and digital/streaming interactive media. A love of teaching and
learning about design with emerging technologies is essential.
PhD, MFA, MS, or MA in Telecommunication, Communication, Computer Science,
Art, or related fields with professional experience preferred.
Work Environment: The Department of Telecommunication is in the College of
Communication Arts and Sciences, which was the nation's very first college
of communication. Today, it remains an innovative and leading international
center for all forms of research and teaching on human communication:
Telecommunication, Communication (interpersonal, organizational, and social
effects), Audiology and Speech Sciences, Advertising, and Journalism.
Within the department, faculty specializing in video, audio, 3D/VR, and
multimedia come together to form the core DMAT faculty, collaborating on
curriculum and program development. We will be launching a new MA and BA
specialization in DMAT beginning fall of 2001. Collaborative interest in
digital media arts is also strong in related departments within the college
and also outside of the college, including education, computer science, and
music.
The College has excellent computer facilities for research and teaching. The
Comm Tech Lab is an award-winning center for multimedia design with
successful CD-ROM and WWW-based multimedia products. The Media Interface and
Network Design (M.I.N.D.) Lab is fast becoming a center of research in
human-computer interaction in 3D virtual environments. The DMAT training lab
currently houses a classroom full of PowerMacs. College computing facilities
include SGI, Pentium, and Mac platforms; a full range of computer graphic,
multimedia, animation, and virtual reality design tools; and specialized
display devices such as a 3D Immersadesk and an immersive virtual reality
system. The college also has excellent audio, video, webcasting and
satellite facilities, and is the home of professional public radio and
television stations.
Founded in 1855 Michigan State University is situated in East Lansing, a
pleasant university town just on the border of Lansing, the Michigan state
capitol. The Michigan State University campus is quite large with over 5000
acres of land, 150 major buildings, over 7000 types of trees and shrubs, 33
miles of roads, and 99 miles of walkways. The campus is home to over 40,000
students from all continents and about 4000 faculty and staff. The cost of
living is very reasonable.
