Interested in doing a PhD in augmented reality?
------------------------------------------------
We have available an EPSRC funded studentship for three
year's full-time study towards a PhD in this area,
starting in September 2001.
Applicants must qualify as UK home fees students
See the EPSRC guidelines for this at :-
http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/student/default.asp?S=0&Key=0&Menu=11&ODoc=145
You will also need at least a 2:1 Honours degree or
equivalent in computer science (with some HCI experience).
Or alternatively, I am particularly interested in applications
from computer literate Psychology graduates (again a 2:1 is
required). The maintenance grant will be the standard EPSRC
value (currently £7,500 p.a.). Your PhD fees will be paid
by the EPSRC.
The objective of the work is to investigate the usability
issues surrounding augmented reality systems. You will work
with a state of the art stereoscopic AR system with shuttered
desktop and immersive HMD stereo display systems. Its likely
we will use the runtime virtual reality software World Toolkit
and the 3D design package 3DS Max. Any experience in these
packages, or in programming using C/C++ will be an
advantage. The goals of the work are to assess what makes an
effective AR system - and what physical, physiological and
pysychological side effects of using these systems can we
avoid by use of good design practice.
You will join the well-established Human Computer Interaction
Group in the School of Computing at Napier University in the
historic City of Edinburgh.
If you are interested then, in the first instance, please
email me at shaun@d ............... for an informal discussion.
