There has been a discussion on the artoolkit mailing list about digital
cameras recently. I am starting to use Firewire cameras because they are
relatively cheap, and small. Plus, they draw their power from the firewire
bus, which is convenient (although, laptop firewire ports, except on the
apple powerbooks, do not provide power, so you have to use an external
hub).
The choices right now are:
- firewire web cams (iBot or Pyro). Rip them appart, and you have a fairly
small round board with a lens on it. They run about $100. You have to use
Video-for-Windows on win2K, or use Linux.
- the DCAM from www.videredesign.com. Same 1/4" CCD as the iBot/Pyro, but
nicer
in many ways. Also comes with a nice software API that runs on linux and
windows, and lets you control the camera and various parameters from
software. About $400.
- the FireFly from www.ptgrey.com. Uses a larger 1/3" CCD, and has a nice
software bundle as well, like the DCAM. About $600.
The FireFly (and I'm pretty sure the DCAM) come with multiple lenses, and
are a relatively small board camera. The iBot/Pyro do not have multiple
lenses.
These cameras can all do 30frames per second uncompressed video, except at
640x480 (where they can only do 15fps). The limit is that the video
encoder on them can only generate a 200Mbit stream (half firewire
bandwidth) and 640x480xRGBx60fps requires about 211MBits.
You can get cheap opaque HMDs if all you want is "video" resolution and
price is a big issue. The SonyA35 and older i-Glasses models both do "half
VGA" (in the sense that they use the 170,000 led displays internally).
They take in sVideo or composite video and do an ok job of rendering it.
You can pick these up for about $300.
Personal Display Systems, Inc., has a full line of better iGlasses,
starting at about $500 and going up to $1000 for the 800x600 one they just
announced.
