Get the Inside Edge
NEW YORK - May 6, 2002 - Employer research is an excellent tool to give you the inside edge in prospecting for potential employers and preparing to interview. Start with the company web site and review the mission statement, history, key personnel and clients, product and services, and the company culture. Next, do an online search (Google is a great resource) and read everything and anything you can find about the company. If you're a college grad check with the Career Office at your alma mater. Ask if they can connect you with alumni who are employed by the organization to possibly schedule an informational interview.
Given the economic climate, it's important to gauge the financial stability of prospective employers. Securities and Exchange Commission filing are available online. Additional financial data is available on sites like Yahoo! Finance and CNN/Money.

WASHINGTON - April 30, 2002 - Extended Unemployment Benefits are currently available to workers who have exhausted regular benefits. Workers who lost their jobs in the recession or in the aftermath of September the 11th are eligible for an extension of jobless benefits for a period of 13 weeks, and up to seven weeks longer in states with high unemployment rates. The Perfect Resume
NEW YORK - May 6, 2002 - Is there really a perfect resume? Yes - and no. Your resume may not be written quite as perfectly as it could be, however, the content should be perfect. The first impression is the one that counts and the first thing a hiring manager will notice is a spelling or punctuation error. Here's a quick checklist to ensure your resume makes the grade:
* Use a dictionary when you write
* Spell check your finished resume and carefully read over every word
* Check for periods at the end of sentences
* Put periods and commas inside quotation marks and parentheses
* Don't switch tenses
* Capitalize all proper nouns
* Keep your date formats consistent
* Don't use more than two fonts
* Do use a font that's easy to read
* Finally, ask a family member or friend to proofread for you - it's often hard to catch our own mistakes.
