Applications of Virtual and Augmented Reality in Manufacturing

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology plans to 
publish a Special Issue on Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality 
(AR) applications in manufacturing. Research on the applications of AR 
and VR is a strong growing area in manufacturing. The challenge is to 
design and implement integrated AR and VR manufacturing systems that 
enhance the manufacturing processes, as well as product and process 
development, leading to shorter lead-time, reduced cost and improved 
quality. The ultimate goal is to create a system which is as good as the 
real world, if not better and more efficient. The main topics of the 
Special Issue focus on the technologies and issues in the development of 
AR and VR systems, and the requirement and practice of product and 
process development that necessitate the use of AR and VR. The main 
themes of the Special Issue are as follows, but not limited to:

1. Distributed AR for Web-based Collaborative Applications 
2. VR and AR in Assembly, Maintenance and Repair 
3. VR and AR in Product Design and Development 
4. Use of VR and AR in Robotics and Tele-robotics 
5. AR Registration Techniques 
6. Rapid Prototyping using AR and VR 
7. Display Technologies in AR and VR Systems 
8. Performance Issues in VR and AR Systems

Authors are invited to submit their recent research work on VR and AR 
technologies, as well as survey findings and future R&D directions in 
this area.  Full electronic manuscripts (MS-Word, Postscript or PDF 
file) should be sent to the guest editors at mpeneeyc@n ......... or 
mpeongsk@n ......... by 31 January 2003. Prospective authors may wish to 
contact the guest editors with abstracts for an early feedback on the 
possible publication.
