About 5 years ago (maybe 7 now) there was an experimental surgery at 
John Hopkins
(I think) where an AR setup and a CT scanner in the OR we combined for a 
brain surgery.
The CT scanner took a picture, the brain tumor was then (not in 
real-time, but close to it)
presented in a false color (ie green) and a stereo image was presented 
to the doctor.
It gave about an order of magnitide in precision on exactly where the 
tumor was.
It took 5..6 loops until all of the tumor was removed - it was a real 
nasty one where
one tumor cell would cause the whole thing to grow back.
It also saved a lot of the guy's brain that would normally have been 
removed.
Sorry thats all I have on that - I think I have the hospital correct.
I am pretty sure it was not the Mayo.

I did have a chat with the head of Anesthisia (sp) at the Mayo.
she was interested in possible means of having a deaf dr monitor 
machines that normally make noise
when there is a problem.
I suggested glasses with blinking LEDs that trigger when a machine gives 
off a warning sound.
You could trigger on the sound itself, or many machines have an 
interface that could be
used to determine an alarm condition.

I am sure you are familiar with the concepts of ultrasound visialization.
However, it looks like you are looking for real things, not concepts.
I would suggest contacting Dr Dave Warner.
Take a look at www.pulsar.org
He sees a lot of the technology out there - helps make it, too

Hi,

I am looking for information on Augmented Reality interfaces, 
particularly in AR systems for medicine. I have already visited the 
HitLab and ATR websites for some info(as posted earlier in the forum) 
and found it helpful but found nothing on AR medical interfaces. Does 
anyone knows of any project research or comercial system?

The experimental surgery you mention is the MAGI project, I guess. It 
was developped at the Computational Imaging Science Group in the 
Division of Radiological Sciences of Guy's Hospital, London.
