Dear reader,
After reading some articles and receiving helpful
commentaries I have come to the following comparison
of tracking systems. Anyone is invited to comment on
this for possible improvements.
Vision-based:
+Low-cost
+Open source (ARToolkit)
+Accurate (at small distance)
+Portable
- Only fiducials (so far no natural features)
- Obtrusive (especially at large distance)
- Dependent on lighting and weather
Inertial-based:
+Low-cost
+Small
+Portable
-Complementary (can not be used strictly alone for
determining location)
-Drifting
-Relative (dead-reckoning)
Positioning systems:
+Absolute position
+Accurate
-High-cost
-Cumbersome
-Extensive (Local Positioning Systems need beacons and
sensors)
Sincerely,
