Predecessors of the ARToolkit

Dear all(cc: Scot and Hiro-sama),

I am looking for information about early tools for augmented reality,
especially ones that, like ARToolkit, tried to make it easier for others to
develop augmented reality environments.

Can anyone point me to what they consider pivotal papers, inventions or
events/publications etc. that opened the way for the ARToolkit and other
augmented reality tools?

I want to get together a bit of history for a paper, but also I feel it's
time to try and chronicle the epic saga of the ARToolkit and the lively
community and garage virtuality attitude that surrounds it.

I think it makes a good story and you're all in it somewhere. :)
