HIT Lab NZ Post-Doctoral Opportunity
The Human Interface Technology Lab New Zealand (HIT Lab NZ) at the
University of Canterbury in New Zealand has funding available to support
a post-doctoral researcher from 2005-2007. This funding is for a two
year fixed term position conducting research on the HIT Lab NZ's
MagicBook project.
The MagicBook is an innovative interface that uses Augmented Reality
(AR) technology to seamlessly move users between real and virtual
worlds. AR interfaces overlay computer graphics on the real world, so
users can see virtual images at the same time as the surrounding real
environment. Unlike other AR interfaces, the MagicBook allows users to
experience AR and fully immersive Virtual Reality (VR). It is one of the
first interfaces of its type and offers the potential to work at the
leading edge of AR interface research. More information about the
MagicBook project can be found at
http://www.hitlabnz.org/route.php?r=page-view&page_name=projects_mb
and about the HIT Lab NZ at http://www.hitlabnz.org
The post-doctoral researcher should have completed (or be near to
completing) a PhD degree in the fields of Computer Science, Electrical
Engineering or Psychology or equivalent and have experience in some of
the following areas:
* Virtual Reality
* Augmented Reality
* Image processing/Computer Vision
* Computer Graphics
* User Interface software development
* Design of interface hardware
* Human Factors Experimental Design
* Usability testing
* Perceptual studies
* User Centred Design
The exact nature of the research on the project will depend on the
skills of the successful applicant. There are opportunities to conduct
research in hardware design for AR interfaces, computer vision tracking
algorithms, AR application development and usability and perceptual
studies.
The post-doctoral researcher will work with a research team consisting
of three PhD students and four faculty members. In addition, they will
have the opportunity to work with leading international visiting
researchers and present their work at national and international
conferences.
The HIT Lab NZ is located at the University of Canterbury in
Christchurch, New Zealand. The lab, partner of the world-leading HIT Lab
US, has a powerful multi-disciplinary approach to high-level research
and education complemented by a close collaboration with a large number
