Hi Jao,
Something I was thinking about a couple of years ago was to be able to =
use
the javascript stuff in VRML to make interactivity easier for beginner
programmers. The problem at the time (and still I think) was that when =
using
ARToolkit, each marker is connceted to its own .wrl file, meaning that =
the
normal interactivity available in VRML can not be used, since VRML does =
not
allow easy communication between different worlds without using java via =
a
socket.
I was thinking that making one big world parented from the camera, or a
reference object in the scene, would allow easier design of interactive
stuff using plain VRML2 and javascript.
Another thought at the time was to negotiate with Blaxxun
http://www.blaxxun.com/en/site/index.html to incorporate hooks for using
ARToolkit with their VRML browser. That would allow a lot of interesting
multi-user stuff as well. I think they might be open to it if you talk =
to
them. I think the project is still alive in some form - and there was =
talk
of going open-source some time ago. From a quick look at their website, =
it
looks like they are interested in licensing thir SDK for various
applications.=20
I believe there are some groups working with Open Scengraph, which looks
promising, but I am not sure there is anything released yet.
The MXR toolkit http://mxrtoolkit.sourceforge.net/ allows the use of
quake-style low poly animated models instead of VRML. Most 3D packages =
can
be persuaded to export them. Your old VRML models could be converted. =
The
marker tracking is not quite as good as ARToolkit I think, but it has =
great
documentation.
Cheers,
Rod.

reader/writer
Joao,
The answer is yes, provided you can compile it.. not trivial, since =
there
were major changes between 0.14.3 and 0.15.x. We compiled it at the HIT =
Lab
NZ and decided to standardize on 0.14.3 for now. The reason is that 0.15 =
is
based on Boost and includes a whole pile of dependencies. Satisfying =
these
dependencies is difficult on the Linux platforms, and on Windows it's a
nightmare.

Phil.
