I assume you use your camera through V4L (Video4Linux), so make sure you selected this during your ./configure of ARToolKit.
Than check if there exists a device called /dev/videoX (just do a "ls -la /dev | grep video" and see if such a device exists and you have acces rights to it.
If it shows a device with an other number than 0 or no number change the video device in the ARToolKit config file (include/AR/config.h, and search for the V4L section) and recompile, or use a commandline parameter.
If this is succesfull your likely to get a "invalid channel" error or somesuch. You can alter this in a similar manner (most likely you'll need channel 0 instead of channel 1).
If the above doesn't work you'll likely need to be more precise about your problems.
