phil(at)eden.net.nz

Philip is a visiting scientist from the HIT Lab NZ. He completed his Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) and Masters of Science in Psychology at Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand before joining the HIT Lab NZ as a doctoral student.

Philip was drawn to the HIT Lab US by the opportunity to work with leaders in the field of virtual reality and human spatial orientation, Professor Tom Furness and Professor Donald Parker, and to further the development of his PhD thesis research.

While at the lab, Philip has been able to develop an understanding of the research capabilities of the HIT Lab, as well as explore opportunities for further research and development activity in the United States.

PhilipÕs research interests include human performance in the space environment, telerobotic manipulation, augmented reality and transitional interfaces, and virtual environments and simulation. He also has a software development consulting business, focusing primarily in the area of 3D virtual environments.

During his 6 months at the HIT Lab US, Philip took a lead role in the Lockheed Martin / NASA project "Team Centered Virtual Interactive PresenceÓ, including presenting the LabÕs work to NASA in Sunnyvale, California.

Philip likes spending time in the great New Zealand outdoors particularly tramping
(hiking), surfing and mountaineering. He also enjoys recreational flying and hopes to further pursue his private pilot's license.
