tneumann(at)hitl.washington.edu

Thomas is Director for Medical Sciences at VisionGate Inc., a company collaborating with the HIT Lab on research into optical tomography of cells and isolated cell organelles as well as engineering of an in-vitro perfused angiogenesis model.

Thomas worked in a surgical clinic in Germany before he was invited to join a research project at the University of Washington in Seattle. Here, he spent several years as a postdoctoral fellow and research assistant professor at the Department of Bioengineering. His main focus was on muscle mechanics, characterization of biomaterials, and tissue engineering.

Thomas has a strong research interest in cell biology of cancer, cancer detection,
automated sample processing for cancer cytology, 3-dimensional cell imaging, angiogenesis, tissue engineering of vasculature, microfabrication and microfluidics

Through collaborating with the lab Thomas wishes to utilize the advantages of the university environment (resources, connection to the scientific community) to meet the challenges in a young company.

His ultimate objective is to create a breakthrough in the technology for the detection of lung cancer in its early stages.

Aside groundbreaking research Thomas enjoys hiking, mountain biking, painting, gardening and reading.
