I have watched with amazement that nobody on the newsgroup has the correct
reference for Howard Rheingold's new book on Virtual reality: If I remember
correctly, he was one of the founders of the newsgroup.

Rheingold's book is an excellent summary of the state of the art. For some
reason, however, it lacks illustrations. His Whole Earth review of VR had
lots of illustrations. Still, I found it the most intelligent,
well-reasoned review of the field I have yet encountered.

And While I am at it, let me give you the reference for the new, updated
version of Myron Krueger's really neat book on Artificial reality.

Krueger invented many of the concepts so valuable for engaging, interactive
systems, but that do not require the viewer/user to use any equipment at
all or to sit at an6y apparatus. Just walk about the room, or watch your
self interact with others and sprites on the TV screen, with all the
control resulting from however you move the various p[arts of your body. A
brilliant set of ideas, an engaging book. (But I am biased.)
