...a virtual classroom for teaching space science and exploration

The Human Interface Technology Laboratory (HITL) at the University of Washington and the Museum of Flight (MOF) in Seattle, Washington, will be embarking on a journey to create Project Starship. Project Starship is an educational program to develop innovative approaches in which advanced interface technologies, including virtual reality, can be optimized to teach groups of students, adults and families about space science and exploration. Project Starship's name appropriately connotes the idea of taking a journey into space to explore the universe and how we make our home within it.

The combined resources of HITL and MOF will fund the initial concept development and design for Project Starship. The primary objective of Project Starship is to create the ultimate experiential learning environment which is widely accessible to teachers and the museum's visitors, and where children learn by exploring and sharing virtual “worlds” through a combination of school curricula and visits to the MOF's Starship.

Project Starship was officially kicked-off on April 29, 1997. We have selected individuals and organizations who may be helpful to us to participate in an external partners kickoff meeting on May 20. Keep posted!
