(Jaron Zepel Lanier) (Sound Bytes) Author: Lewis, Peter H. Abstract: Jaron Zepel Lanier is a computer software programmer who originated the term virtual reality and developed the data gloves and eye goggles that allow users to experience a virtual reality environment. At one time, Lanier tried to patent the phrase but it became too popular and the effort to control its use became too expensive. Lanier is now heading several development efforts at his new Silicon Valley firm, New Leaf, to design virtual reality applications for medical and entertainment purposes. Virtual reality can be used by the medical profession to provide simulations of a patient's body and to help doctors work with sophisticated surgical instrumentation that is otherwise extremely difficult to control. Virtual reality would be used for entertainment to provide a variety of functions that would not be restricted to pure entertainment but would offer different services, such as education and retail, in a single location. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Type: Interview Company: New Leaf Topic: Virtual reality New Technique Interview Programmer Record#: 16 261 030 *** End ***
