(virtual reality wedding) Author: Lawton, Stephen Abstract: Hugh Jo and Monika Liston were married in a virtual reality wedding that was powered by five DEC DECpc AXP 3000 600 systems. The wedding is believed to the first to occur in cyberspace and also had the first virtual guest; an editor for Bride Magazine attended the festivities via an AT&T videophone. Separate monitors showed attendees the views of the bride and the groom. A nine-screen matrix provided both participants' views. The views included the surrounding images and landscape of the virtual reality realm of the Lost City of Atlantis. Three Kubota Graphics Corp 3-D Photographic accelerated Model 620s were connected to the Alphas through a Turbochannel link. Problems with limited systems memory and incorrectly partitioned hard disks caused the system to run out of swap space for the images and the wedding ended abruptly.
