I think the focus of s.v-w should be kept on the "scientific" aspects
of VR. Whether or not "cultural" aspects are part of the science is
probably debatable... however, the post which sparked this off was
just inappropriate.

If someone wants to spout forth about [so-called] shamanism, mushrooms
and the gospel according to Mackenna then they can do it somewhere
else. There are thousands of other newsgroups more suitable than this
one.

Also of concern is the (seemingly increasing) number of irrelevant
cross-posted announcements (just read something about a European
software competition for example). I'd rather this stuff didn't
appear too.

If anyone doubts the necessity of keeping the noise down, try reading
sci.electronics... there's some very good stuff in there, but it's a
hell of a job spotting it.

IMHO this has nothing to do with the things we read sci-vw for; I
don't mind getting it, but I can see that people who have to pay for
bandwidth might get upset abt. paying to receive this.

Perhaps its time that you started a sub-group for those who want to
discuss philosophical and cultural questions - most people on sci-vw
are "techies" or those involved in moving the technology out into the
real world.

I share your unease......
