General Reality Ships First Public Theater HMD

CyberEye* Model CEP-100, the first head-mounted display for public
theater applications, now shipping at just $1,995

October 11, 1994, San Francisco, CA: At the Multimedia Expo here today,
General Reality Company announced that it has initiated volume shipments
of its CyberEye* Model CEP-100, the first head-mounted display (HMD)
designed specifically for public theater applications. The CEP-100 also
provides major price/performance advantages over conventional HMDs for applications such
as museum displays, tradeshow promotions, special events, attended arcade
games,and information kiosks.

The CyberEye CEP-100 is based on the field-proven CyberEye CE-100
individual user HMD introduced by General Reality in May, 1994. According
to Arthur Zwern, president of General Reality Company, "Our first product filled an
important and unserved niche between $10,000 workstation HMDs and $500
home video game glasses, by providing superior visual performance and comfort to the
desktop PC user for under $2,000. Now, we're bringing the same value to public
applications, with the first public-use HMD under $2,000. Our new Model
CEP-100 is the easiest to use, lightest weight, most hygienic, lowest priced HMD
now available for public VR attractions, and the only public-use HMD in the
world that you can wear for an entire 2 hour movie".

The new General Reality HMD features several advances over the original
CyberEyeindividual user models, including integrated high-performance audio
speakers and elimination of all user-specific adjustments such as focus and
interpupillary distance. This was made possible by CyberEye's unique optical system, which
provides compatibility with a wide range of human eye separations and with all
eyeglasses. The CyberEye CEP-100 also includes a top visor/open bottom
design to block outside light while eliminating the risk of injury created by
conventional HMDs when users can not see their own feet (full-immersion
eye cups are optional, with signed liability release). And, the new model
includes a proprietary optical element that enhances apparent visual resolution
while eliminating the "pixelation" transitions between elements in the LCD
display. According to Zwern, "users will think they are viewing a $10,000 CRT
system instead of a $1,995 liquid crystal display".

The CyberEye public-use HMD is available in two versions, the single
video input CEP-100M at $1,995, and a dual-input (true 3D) stereoscopic
Model CEP-100S at $2,495. Availability is immediate, with significant volume discounts and
90-day warranties. According to Zwern "many suppliers are promising low-priced
HMDs, but haven't even completed volume production designs. We're the only
virtual reality company shipping high-performance products with immediate
delivery at prices below $2,000."

General Reality is a leading virtual reality developer, with a customer
base ranging from the largest AutoCad training center in the world to major

Editors' Note: Photos and slides available. Zwern is available for
interviews, and will be teaching a workshop on applying HMDs at the Meckler Virtual
Reality Show in New York City, November 29 to December 2, 1994. General Reality
will be exhibiting in Booth 105.
