In connection with the Fourth European Conference on Computer Supported
Cooperative Work in Stockholm September 11-14 we will organise a workshop
titled "Collaboration in Virtual Environments - Methods and Experiences".

The workshop is free of charge, and will be held at the premises of the Royal
Institute of Technology in Stockholm on Sunday September 10th.

The organisers are

       Steve Benford	<sdb@cs.nott.ac.uk>	University of Nottingham
 Lennart E Fahlén	<lef@sics.se>	Swedish Institute of Computer Science
 Kai-Mikael Jää-Aro	<kai@nada.kth.se>	Royal Institute of Technology

Motivation:

A sizable community, interested in using virtual environments for
collaboration, has grown up in the last few years, particularly in Europe. We
therefore feel that the time is ripe to gather practitioners in the area to a
workshop to specifically discuss experiences of developing and using virtual
environments for collaboration.

Relevant issues include but are not limited to:

* User representations
* Peripheral awareness
* Human-human communication issues
* Scaling issues in distribution
* World partitioning
* Subjective world representations
* User-specific interfaces to common environments
* Concurrent access to objects
* Transactions in virtual spaces
* Access negotiations
* Tasks and tools appropriate for collaboration

The goal of the workshop is a document, gathering the different experiences in
the above-mentioned areas (and others that the participants feel to be
important), disseminating proven techniques, high-lighting problems and
unresolved questions, and suggesting ways to study and resolve particular
issues.

Those interested in participating should prepare a position paper and submit it
to the contact person at the address below before August 1st. The collected
position papers will be copied and circulated to the participants so that they
can prepare comments for the workshop.
