Eighth Annual Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology
Sponsored by ACM SIGGRAPH and SIGCHI

November 15-17, 1995
Pittsburgh, PA

Call for Participation

UIST'95 is the premier forum for innovations in developing
human-computer interfaces. The symposium brings together
user-interface researchers and practitioners with an interest in
techniques, tools, and technology for constructing high-quality,
innovative user interfaces. The intimate size, single track, and
comfortable surroundings make this symposium an ideal opportunity to
exchange research results and implementation experiences. Papers,
panels, and demonstrations are sought on a wide range of
user-interface topics.

				PAPERS

Authors are encouraged to submit high-quality papers about research
to enhance user-interface functionality or to improve the
user-interface development process. Appropriate topics include
but are not limited to:

- Techniques for advanced interaction functionality, such as
multimedia, virtual worlds, innovative displays, unconventional
input devices, and highly interactive user interfaces.

- Innovative software architectures for developing user interfaces,
including those associated with user-interface management systems,
window systems, toolkits, and knowledge-based user interfaces.

- Tools and techniques for designing, constructing, and evaluating
user interfaces, including automated tools and object-oriented
techniques.

- User interfaces with special operating system requirements,
such as real-time, multi-user, multi-input, multi-threaded, and
distributed interfaces.

- User interfaces for difficult or challenging applications, such as
large and/or complex information sets.

- User interfaces for people with special needs.

- The internationalization of the user interface.

Videotapes of implementations are encouraged. Accepted papers will be
invited to submit videotape for a video proceedings that will be
distributed at the conference. However, papers must stand on their own
and will be reviewed independently from submitted videotapes.

Submissions must present original research relevant to the symposium.
Papers should be at most 5000 words or 10 ACM conference pages in
length. Videotapes should be at most 8 minutes long. The submission
should consist of 6 copies of a paper, 5 copies of an NTSC VHS videotape
(if there is one), and a cover letter indicating the primary author's
name, affiliation, address, phone number and email address (if at all
possible). The title page should include an abstract (fewer than
200 words) and keywords. The cover letter should also indicate whether
the submitted video can be part of the video proceedings. An author's
packet with additional and complete information is available by
anonymous ftp from ftp.cc.gatech.edu in /pub/uist95, by World-Wide-Web
(Mosaic) at http://www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu/UIST95/uist95top.html, or from the
program chair.

Submissions must be received by the program chair no later than
April 28, 1995. FAX cannot be used for submission. Authors will be
notified of acceptance by June 30, 1995.

				PANELS

Panels offer an opportunity to exchange ideas in an atmosphere that
reflects the workshop origins of the symposium. Appropriate topics
are the same as for submitted papers, but panel sessions offer greater
flexibility in presentation format and content, so feel free to
suggest something unconventional.

Panel selection will be based on the importance, originality, focus,
and timeliness of the topic, as well as the potential for informative,
lively, or controversial discussion. Panels should have no more than
five members, including the chair, and should last from one to
one-and-one-half hours. No more than half of the total time will be
allowed for position statements by panelists.

A panel submission should be no more than six ACM conference pages long.
It should include:

- The panel title, and the name, affiliation and contact information for
each panelist.

- A description of the panel topic and presentation format, including
why this topic is important to symposium attendees.

- A position statement and very brief biographical sketch for each
panelist.

Please also attach a cover letter including the panel title, length of
time desired, panelists' names and affiliations, and the panel
organizer's name, affiliation, address, email address, and phone number.

Submissions must be received by the panels chair no later than
April 28, 1995. Fax cannot be used for submissions. Authors will be
notified of acceptance by June 30, 1995.

		 		DEMOS

UIST '95 will host an evening reception including demonstrations of
work at CMU's Human-Computer Interaction Institute and demonstrations
submitted for review. Demonstrations are intended to show early
implementation of novel interface concepts or HCI systems. Demos
enable conference attendees to view and try systems in action, as well
as to discuss the systems with the people who created them. All demos
will be given in parallel in an informal setting (i.e., small groups
gathered around workstations). The reception will last three hours; a
demo should be less than 30 minutes long so that it can be given many
times. UIST '95 will help coordinate equipment for demos.

A demo submission will be evaluated on the basis of its potential to work
well as a demo, while bringing new and innovative research ideas to the
conference. Commercial products are eligible, but sales and marketing
activities are not appropriate. The submission should consist of a cover
letter indicating the primary author's name, affiliation, address,
phone number, and email address (if at all possible), and three copies
of the following:

- A two page summary (in ACM conference format) of research
contributions illustrated in the demo. This summary will be included
in the UIST '95 proceedings, and should include appropriate references
and contact information so readers can find out more about the system.

- A detailed description of hardware and software requirements. Please
state whether you can bring the necessary hardware and software to the
conference.

- A demo storyboard with at least six screen pictures (not more than
six pages, including pictures), or an NTSC VHS videotape of the demo.

Submissions must be received by the demos chair no later than April 28,
1995. FAX cannot be used for submission. Authors will be notified
of acceptance by June 30, 1995.

			  TECHNOTES

Technique Notes ("TechNotes") offer an opportunity to disseminate
important new interaction and visualization techniques that are
not substantial enough to warrant a full-length paper. A
TechNote should be at most 2 ACM conference pages long. It is
encouraged, although not required, that the submission be
accompanied by a videotape that is no more than 6 minutes long.
Accepted TechNotes will be published in the proceedings and
presented at the conference. The heart of a TechNote should not
be exhaustive implementation details or user studies, but rather
sufficient supporting audiovisual material (screen dumps in the
paper, and video/audio in the conference presentation) to
convince the reader that the technique is worthwhile and to
explain how to replicate it. (For those familiar with the ACM
Transactions on Graphics, a TechNote can be thought of as a
"conference version" of an "Interaction Technique Notebook"
article.)

The submission should consist of 5 copies of a 2-page paper, 5
copies of an NTSC VHS videotape (if there is one), and a cover
letter indicating the primary author's name, affiliation,
address, phone number and email address (if at all possible).

Submissions must be received by the TechNotes chair no later than
April 28, 1995. FAX cannot be used for submissions. Authors
will be notified of acceptance by June 30, 1995.
