Subject: ADMIN: Everything you need to know about the VIRTU-L mailing list Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1993 21:05:33 -0500 From: "Gregory B. Newby" Bob, perhaps you'll post this information to s.v-w. If regular Usenet readers keep this information on hand, they can tell their friends! Greg ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VIRTU-L Appended are instructions for subscribing to virtu-l and vrapp-l, the email redistribution lists for s.v-w and s.v-w.apps. Contact gbnewby@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu or gbnewby@uiucvmd.bitnet if you have any troubles. General information on ALL listserv lists is available from the command "list global" sent to ANY listserv, e.g., listserv@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu (note: this is the IBM Listserv, the original, not Un*x versions). My .sig follows the info file: This message tells how to subscribe to the email redistributions of the Usenet newsgroups sci.virtual-worlds and sci.virtual-worlds.apps Please note that these are redistributions for those who do NOT have Usenet access. The content is the same as for the newsgroups. Also note that traffic can be quite high, often over 30 messages per day. Both mailing lists are maintained by the Listserv program. To subscribe to a mailing list, send this message to listserv@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu (or to listserv@uiucvmd on Bitnet): subscribe listname Your Full Name So, for virtu-l, the email redistribution of sci.virtual-worlds, someone named Jane Smith would send this note: subscribe virtu-l Jane Smith For vrapp-l, the email redistribution of sci.virtual-worlds.apps, John Smith would send: subscribe vrapp-l John Smith In order to unsubscribe, one needs to simply send the command "unsubscribe listname" to the Listserv address. You do not need to include your name. Notice that all subscription requests should go to the LISTSERV address, Never to the List Address! Only things which you intend to post to the thousands of world-wide readers of each list should go to the list address (virtu-l@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu or virtu-l@uiucvmd.bitnet, or vrapp-l@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu or vrapp-l@uiucvmd.bitnet) Both lists are available in digest form. This puts all messages for a period into one long email note. To set the list for digest mode, send this command to Listserv: set listname digest (Where "listname" is the list to which you are subscribed) virtu-l is digested daily: on any day for which there was traffic, you will get ONE message containing all traffic for that day. vrapp-l is digested weekly: you get one digest every week. When vrapp-l traffic picks up, it will probably be changed to daily, too. One last note: Listserv does NOT keep logs of virtu-l or vrapp-l. Logs are maintained at the moderation sites. For sci.virtual-worlds, this is ftp.washington.edu. For sci.virtual-worlds.apps, the site is kth.se. For both, you need FTP to access the archives. Read the FAQ posted to the newsgroups each month or so for more detailed access information. If you have any questions, comments, or complaints about the Listserv redistribution, contact the list maintainer, Greg Newby. His email is: gbnewby@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu OR gbnewby@uiucvmd.bitnet OR gbnewby@uxh.cso.uiuc.edu Enjoy! PS: Since both the Listserv side and the Usenet side of each group is moderated, messages tend to come in spurts. There are occasionally days with no messages at all, and mail you post might not get distributed immediately. ***** Greg Newby, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ***** Ass't Prof, Grad.
