A--WORKSHOPS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MILITARY STANDARDS FOR DEFENSE
SIMULATIONS. A workshop will be held in Orlando, FL on September
24-26, 1991. This workshop is aimed at the critical objective of
establishing international standards for interoperability of
heterogeneous simulations. The current work on networking
standards began in August 1989 with the first workshop on Standards
for the Interoperability of Defense Simulations. A second workshop
took place in January 1990, a third workshop in August 1990, and a
fourth workshop March 1991. As a result of these workshops and
subsequent subgroup meetings, over 70 position papers were
submitted to the University of Central Florida Institute for
Simulation and Training (IST) containing recommendations for the
standard. Using the work of SIMNET as a baseline and considering
recommendations made in meetings and position papers, IST has
developed the final draft for a military standard which describes
the form and types of messages to be exchanged between simulated
entities in a Distributed Interactive Simulation. The draft
document represents the work of over 300 scientists, engineers, and
technicians from industry, academia and government. Based on
comments at the Fourth Workshop, IST is modifying the final draft
and will publish version 1.0 in September 1991. This final draft
will become a Military Standard and eventually a DoD Standard. On
24-26 September, IST will host the fifth simulation standards
workshop at the Holiday Inn, 6515 International Drive, Orlando, FL
(407)351-3500. Participants are encouraged to stay at the workshop
hotel. The purpose of the fifth workshop is to begin development
of a draft Revision 1 of the Standard to add Communications
Architecture, Communications Services, Correlations Between
Terrain, Ocean and Atmosphere Models, Performance Measures,
Simulation Management, and COMM/SIGINT/EW capabilities.
Consequently, this workshop is very important to defense industries
involved with simulation technologies and government agencies
preparing requirements for acquisitions such as the Close Combat
Tactics Trainer, Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer and
Advanced Distributed Simulation Technology. The Fifth Workshop
will allow time for individuals to present their recommendations
regarding Revision 1 of the standard. These presentations on the
above topics will be allocated 15 minutes for remarks and five
minutes for questions. Individuals wishing to speak must submit
position papers to Christina Bouwens, IST, 12424 Research Pkwy
Suite 300, Orlando, FL 32826, (407)658-5511, FAX (407)658-5059 on
the proposed topics no later than 10 September 1991. The Working
Group Chairmen will select speakers based on criticality of the
issues addressed. Printed copies of the draft standard, rationale
document, and minutes from the first four workshops may be
purchased from Mr. Vince Amico, UCF College of Extended Studies,
Orlando, FL 32816-0177, (407)249-6102, FAX (407)249-6113. Workshop
registration fee is $50.00 for Industry and $25.00 for
Government/University. Please contact Mr. Vince Amico at the above
address to register for the workshop.
