What is being done to map higher dimensional spaces into 3D?

E.g. a while back I saw a tv show on computer graphics in which
someone rotated a hypercube projected on a video screen, giving
consistent but surprising permutations. VR seems like an excellent
opportunity to immerse oneself in such a mind expanding soup,
especially for the time being with multidimensional wireframes.

At SRI.VR someone pointed me to Rudy Rucker's writing. A couple of
lines rom his sci-fi "Master of Space and Time:"

"Your arm's in another dimension now," Harry explained.
     "We're in a three-dimensional cross-section of infinite-
dimensional superspace. If you try, you can get your arm
back." ... "Flip your wrist," urged Harry.
I flipped my wrist some funny way, and suddenly my hand
     was back.
