Although there are many reasons for this, one fundamental problem is that much of the work gets reported in publications widely distributed only within Japan. Some of these publications are entirely in English, and even most Japanese-language journals contain information in English that can serve as useful research leads, such as titles, author names and addresses, and sometimes abstracts. This paper attempts to address part of the problem by listing computer science journals published by various Japanese professional organizations and corporations. Introduction Although many of the technological achievements made by the Japanese over the past decade are well-known, there is surprisingly little awareness in the U.S. of Japanese developments in computer science. As is the case with other sciences, this is due to several factors, including ignorance, language barriers, and a lack of easily accessible information on research results. This is true despite evidence that computer science research in Japan is comparable in many ways to that being performed elsewhere. One fundamental problem is that only a limited amount of Japanese work in the field is reported in journals commonly read by U.S. researchers. While these are undoubtedly important, it represents only a small percentage of papers actually written. Moreover, given the long publication delays common in computer science journals, this work is often close to being obsolete when published. The remaining work, and especially the most recent work, is reported in forums widely distributed only in Japan. These forums include English-language journals, as well as those written in Japanese. As one example, consider the Journal of Information Processing. This journal is an English-language technical journal published by the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ), one of the leading computer science professional societies in Japan. However, only about 25 libraries in the U.S. subscribe to this journal, as compared to hundreds of libraries for a comparable international journal, the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering. The problem is even more severe for Japanese-language technical journals. For example, as far could be determined, the journal Computer Software, which is published by another professional society called the Japan Society for Software Science and Technology, is not received by even a single library in the U.S. Similarly, the Transactions of the IEICE (D- 1) published by the Japanese Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, is received by only one library in the U.S. This is despite the fact that even Japanese-language journals such as this one typically contain titles, authors, and sometimes abstracts in English that could be useful as research leads to computer scientists working in the U.S. Given this lack of penetration by Japanese journals in the United States, it is not surprising that most U.S. researchers remain unaware of Japanese advances in the field. Here, we attempt to address one aspect of this problem by collecting together a list of Japanese computer science journals published by professional organizations and companies. The hope is that people interested in the topics covered by the journals will find enough information to either subscribe directly or to obtain copies through various interlibrary loan facilities. The three sections that follow list the journals based on the sponsoring organization. Specifically, Section 2 lists publications by Japanese professional organizations, Section 3 by Japanese corporations, and Section 4 by Japanese government laboratories. For each organization, the following information is given: the organization name and address, a list of publications in English, and a list of publications primarily in Japanese. If we are not aware of any publications by that organization in a given language, "None" is specified. A journal entry typically appears as follows: Name: journal name Scope: topical coverage Frequency: publication frequency ISSN: International Standard Serial Number Other: other information published Subscrip.: address for subscriptions, if different from organization address Notes: miscellaneous information The ISSN is an international "unique id" for the periodical that librarians or others can use to identify the journal. Given that many of the journal titles below have been translated from the Japanese, this number provides the best means to locate a particular journal in which you are interested. One final note: although we have attempted to included the most important Japanese periodicals related to computer science, this should in no way be viewed as an exhaustive listing. This is especially true for company publications, which are often numerous.
