I think this bit of information might be particularly useful.

PeachPit Press will be releasing a book on virtual reality around the end 
of the year entitled Silicon Mirage: The Art and Science of Virtual Reality, 
by Steve Aukstakalnis and David Blatner. It is my understanding that the 
book will be considerably different in content than those currently being 
discussed in this forum. It is expected to focus on detailed, hype-free
explanations of the various enabling technologies, relevant issues in the 
mechanics of human perception, human factors, real field applications, and
much more.

The book is expected to be very visual, with lots of pictures and diagrams. 
While being written for a general science audience, it is also intended for 
use in *academia*.
