...WELCOMES YOU TO EDINBURGH!

The venue for the 10th annual conference in 1992 is Scotland's capital city
of Edinburgh. Apart from its historic, architectural and scenic beauty
Edinburgh is also renowned for its International Arts Festival. The city
has also recently initiated an annual International Science Festival which
takes place during the Easter vacation and will coincide with our
conference. With hundreds of events, many hands-on lectures and exhibitions
catering for all ages, the Science Festival is rapidly gaining in
popularity. Computing and graphics are prominent in many events and with
the UNIVERSE being the theme for 1992, the Science Festival coupled with
the attractions of the city are certain to add interest to the Conference.

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

We have attracted some leading keynote speakers to address the conference
themes and other major issues of relevance to professionals in the
industry.

The first topic of the conference is PARALLELISM for REAL-TIME and
DISTRIBUTED GRAPHICS, reflecting the local work in the University in the
Parallel Computing Centre. The topics of SCIENTIFIC VISUALISATION and
VIRTUAL REALITY cover new technology areas which will be addressed by
keynote speakers and by researchers in the field.

EXHIBITION

A full 2-day exhibition from 9.00 - 17.00 will accompany the conference
showing a wide range of related graphics hardware and software. Organised
tours of the exhibition will be available. The exhibition will also include
a research fair and posters.

SOCIAL PROGRAMME

As usual we promise to give you time for informal discussions with other
delegates and the opportunity to see something of the city of Edinburgh.

A GHOSTS and GHOULS tour will take place on the Monday night to get you in
the mood for the conference! You will learn about Edinburgh's past history
and then visit the SCOTCH WHISKY HERITAGE CENTRE including a buffet
reception and tasting.

On the Tuesday evening delegates are invited to a Civic Reception followed
by the Conference Dinner at the City Chambers.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Scientific Visualization in a Network Computing Environment
T. Todd Elvins (San Diego Supercomputer Centre)

In networked computing environments, scientists increasingly rely on shared
resources to satisfy their visualisation needs. Giving access to centrally
located, maintained, and operated network resources is a big job for
visualisation systems developers but leads to better utilisation of
high-end hardware and software. The presentation will examine ways in
which this can be achieved.

Parallel Computing and Visualisation
D.J. Wallace (Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre)

As systems increase in power and memory, they will both require novel
visualisation techniques for the assimilation of results and also provide
new opportunities for real-time visualisation. There is also the question
of the extent to which graphic design and visualisation will themselves be
performed on parallel machines, or whether they will be dominated by
special purpose silicon devices. This talk by the Director of Edinburgh
PCC will explore some of these issues.

NURBS - What and Why?
W.T. Hewitt (Univeristy of Manchester)

Non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) have been identified as the
technology for curve and surface representation in many computer aided
geometric design packages and in a number of standards (PHIGSPLUS, STEP,
CGM). They are generally used as the primitive for computation even where
the user has an interface through analytic geometry. This talk will show
why NURBS are such powerful tools for curve and surface representation.

Virtual Reality & Cyberspace: From Science Fiction to Science Fact.
Robert Stone (UK National Advanced Robotics Research Centre)

This presentation will review the emergence of VR from military and space
research in the US and will illustrate some of the more important
developments within the UK and further afield - from surgery and
psychiatric research to manned spaceflight, from robotics to computer-aided
design and architectural walk-throughs. Some of the early anecdotal and
experimental human factors results using the ARRC Test Bed will be
presented, together with suggestions for future research.

The Role of the Computer Graphics Suppliers Association
Gus Scott (Computer Graphics Suppliers Association)

This presentation describes the shape, and function of the Association,
including its organisational structure, its internal functions in support
of its members, and its external functions in promoting the success of the
industry. Issues such as training and education, ethics of sales and
marketing, the exhibition scene, staff remuneration, and the importance of
standards, are covered.
