A simple optical system to play with:

A large magnifying glass (Fresnel maybe) fixed to the
monitor and two negative eyepieces can be so arranged that;

1. two area's of a monitor are individualy projected on the
   eyes. (this could also be done with a diaphragm) The left area is
   projected on the right eye and vice versa in case the head is
   held straight up.

2. properly positioning your head you will notice that within
   limits the projected images >follow< your up/down left/right
   head rotation movements.

   Moving back and forth will magnify and minify the picture
   respectively.

Its use is maybe limited but gives you something like a 80 degree
hires stereoscopic vision depending on the resolution of the monitor and
size and quality of the fixed lens.

Borrow someone's pair of - spectacles for the eyepieces.
