INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR OF VIRTUAL REALITY R & D

Meckler Ltd., publishers of the VIRTUAL REALITY REPORT and
organizers of conferences on virtual reality, are to publish an
INTERNATIONAL DIRECTORY OF VIRTUAL R & D. The Directory aims to
provide detailed and comprehensive information on research
currently underway throughout the world which will impact upon
both the technology and application of virtual reality. It is also
hoped that the dissemination of detailed information on VR research
to other researchers worldwide will provide a comprehensive R&D
reference for all those in the field.

The Directory aims to cover technological developments in
teleoperation/telepresence/advanced robotics, HCI techniques,
synthetic environments (object-oriented/non-object-oriented/real-
time, etc.), senses (audio/vision/tactile/display technology), body
suits/helmets/tracking, and parallel processing for VR. In addition,
progress in the application of virtual reality to education/training,
simulation, the military, games, space, marine/aviation, and medical
fields will be covered.

n	The bulk of the Directory will consist of individual entries on
R&D projects being undertaken by academic and commercial research
institutions. Each entry will include information on a project's
aims, key researchers, results achieved to date, funding bodies,
number of VR researchers, literature published by researchers, and
possible future spinoff research. All entries to the Directory will
be compiled from questionnaires completed by VR researchers, along
with material from other sources, by the Editor and Advisory
Editors. Needless to say, there will be *no cost to any institution
for inclusion of R&D project details* in the Directory.

The project is being supported by researchers at some of the
most well-known VR research institutions worldwide. Advisory
Editors to the project include Dr. William M. Bricken of the
University of Washington's HIT Laboratory; Dr. Robert J. Stone of the
UK's Advanced Robotics Research Centre; Dr. J. Michael Moshell,
Director of the University of Florida's IST Visual Systems
Laboratory; and Drs. J. Nomura and R. Nakajima of Japan's Matsushita
Electric Works Ltd.

To compile a serious and comprehensive directory intended for
serious researchers, the Editors must solicit the cooperation of
those institutions involved in virtual reality research. We would
therefore urge as many researchers involved in projects (academic
or commercial) which impact upon the development of VR to contact
the Directory's Editor, giving *brief* details of the nature and scope
of R&D projects being undertaken within their organizations. A
questionnaire detailing exactly what information is required for
entry to the Directory will then be sent by return. Obviously, the
more entries we can make on worldwide R&D projects, the more
comprehensive and therefore valuable will be the Directory as a
research resource.
