      Announcing:

         The First Conference on
                             Cyberspace in Music Therapy

                       in conjunction with

MedArt International 1992 World Congress on
                                         Arts and Medicine

                        February 29, 1992

                     Sheraton Hotel & Towers
                          New York City

Purpose -

This conference focuses on the current and proposed uses of electronic
technology in the Music Therapy field. The conference is organized into 4
symposium/workshop sessions, each 2 hours in duration. Topics to be covered
include: cyberspace, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, expert systems,
knowledge-based models, biofeedback, psychophysiology, validation, assessment.
All sessions will strongly emphasize therapeutic applications. Clear, concise
explanations will enable scientists with no music therapy backgrounds, as well
as therapists and artists with no computer backgrounds to understand and
implement this exciting new technology.

Saturday, February 29, 8AM
CS1 An Introduction to Cyberspace in Music Therapy
Recommended Audience: Health Professionals and Creative Arts Therapists,
Engineers, Scientists, Music Educators.
Method: Symposium
Level: Basic
Objectives: (1) To introduce the concept of cyberspace music therapy,
which involves the use of computer technology in the treatment process;
(2) to extend the music therapy model, which has focused upon the triple
interaction of client, music and therapist, to include virtual reality and
cyberspace techniques; (3) to discuss the history, theory and practice of
music therapy as it applies to the cyberspace environment; (4) to define
terminology and discuss equipment and software that is needed to implement
these ideas in the treatment process.
Faculty: Sr. Jean Anthony Gileno, Ph.D., CMT-BC, Director
                Rebecca T. Mercuri, M.S., M.S.Eng., Moderator
Abstract: Methods and techniques of music therapy that have been used
over the past 40 years have included traditional instruments and the voice.
Although technology has been employed in music therapy treatment of the
physically and mentally challenged, the field has not yet been developed to
an extent where auditory, tactile, visual and other stimulation are combined
to produce a complete sensory experience. Cyberspace technology provides the
opportunity to create a controllable, repeatable course of treatment with
enhanced interactivity and a sense of realism for the participants. This
course will discuss tools and techniques that will enable the implementation
of the cyberspace model in music therapy.

Saturday, February 29, 10:30AM
CS2 Applications of Cyberspace Music Therapy
Recommended Audience: Health Professionals and Creative Arts Therapists,
Engineers, Scientists, Music Educators.
Method: Symposium
Level: Intermediate
Objectives: (1) To focus on a variety of applications for cyberspace
in music therapy settings; (2) to discuss the work being done at NASA in
artificial intelligence and virtual reality technology which is potentially
applicable to music therapy; (3) to enumerate hardware and software tools
which are available from NASA at minimal cost for use in these applications;
(4) to detail a specific application where cyberspace techniques can be used
with the psychiatric adult population; (5) to discuss some of the potential
problems and hazards which need to be addressed when applying this technology.
Faculty: Nick Short, M.S.Eng., Director
                Rebecca Mercuri, M.S., M.S.Eng., Moderator
Sr. Patricia Ann Deller, M.Mus., Instructor
                Greg Lee, B.S., Instructor
Abstract: This session will elaborate on the various types of
applications possible within cyberspace music therapy technology.
Traditionally, music therapy counseling sessions have taken place using
the verbal/musical model of treatment. Here, artificial intelligence
techniques used at NASA, such as expert systems and knowledge-based models,
are applied to validation and assessment techniques in music therapy. The
virtual reality and cyberspace environments will be explored in proposed
treatment settings. Ethics issues of this technology will be discussed.

Saturday, February 29, 2PM
CS3 The Use of Biofeedback in Cyberspace Music Therapy
Recommended Audience: Health Professionals and Creative Arts Therapists,
Engineers, Scientists, Music Educators.
Method: Symposium
Level: Basic
Objectives: (1) To survey uses and experimental research involving
biofeedback in the music therapy setting; (2) to discuss the training of
music therapy interns in biofeedback techniques and assessment; (3) to extend
the uses of biofeedback into the cyberspace music therapy model.
Faculty: Sr. Jean Anthony Gileno, Ph.D., CMT-BC, Director
                Hemant Kishore Desai, M.A., Instructor
Abstract: This session will overview the current literature in
biofeedback music research, with an emphasis on how health care professionals
should be trained in the use of these techniques. A video demonstration of a
training program for music therapy interns and nurses at Immaculata College
will be shown. An application in stress reduction, from the New York Institute
of Technology, which combines biofeedback with computer-simulated imagery and
music, will be detailed. Psychophysiology and personality assessment will be
discussed.

Saturday, February 29, 4:30PM
CS4 Cyberspace Video Review
Recommended Audience: Health Professionals and Creative Arts Therapists,
Engineers, Scientists, Music Educators, Musicians, Artists.
Method: Workshop
Level: Basic
Objectives: (1) To exhibit, using video and audio demonstration tapes,
current research and tools available for cyberspace applications; (2) to
discuss how this technology can be applied to the arts therapies.
Faculty: Rebecca Mercuri, M.S., M.S.Eng., Director
                Nick Short, M.S.Eng., Moderator
                Vincent Iannone, M.Mus., Instructor
