Just a brief note to inject some news on the UK schools VR scene:

The Guardian, Thursday, January 16th., 1992
>From Microfile (Ed: Jack Schofield), p 35:

Three "virtual reality" projects are being run at West Denton School in
Newcastle upon Tyne, using equipment from Dimension International. The
#100,000 experiment is being funded by the Department of Employment and
"a number of commercial partners", including NEI Parsons, a manufacturer
of turbine generators.

The three projects are Dangerous Workplace, Intelligent City, and Outdoor
Gallery. Dangerous Workplace is based on factory space at NEI Parsons and
covers health and safety at work. Intelligent City aims to help pupils learn
a foreign language by immersing them in a foreign "virtual city". Outdoor
Gallery uses images of well-known works by Henry Moore to explore the siting
of public sculptures.

The projects involve the use of desktop colour monitors rather than the VPL
EyePhones and DataGloves of "full" VT systems. The school is using a 33Mhz
486-based PC with a Spea graphics card and a Spaceball controller.
