Subject: CONF: GE VR '92' Clarification
Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1992 14:27:15 -0400

I'd like to start off by commending this news group on its reviews and
announcements on the numerous VR associated conferences. Quite often
being immersed in the development end of new applications prevents us
all from getting out into the REAL world.

In response to the review of the 1992 EFDPMA Conference on "VIRTUAL REALITY",
Washington, DC, June 1-2 by Michael Almquist; the hardware platform used to
generate the "photorealistic realtime texture mapped images" shown in Dr.
Richard Economy's presentation were produced from GE's Compuscene line of
realtime image generators. Any confusion as to the hardware used to
create this footage, was related to Dr. Economy's talk being focused
more on the technology of VR, than an hour long commercial on GE Compuscene
products. However, for the sake of clarification......

This hardware, designed and built at General Electrics Simulation and
Ships Controls Division (SCSD) in Daytona Beach, Florida, is the result of
35 years of development of "visionics" simulation products and
  training programs.

The algorithms and designs developed are proprietary to GE and have been
used in the early 1980's to produce realtime phototextured databases(worlds)
for a wide range of training and visualization applications. Taking
advantage of industry reduction in packaging size and costs has now
allowed GE to provide a similar level of high performance, once reserved
for high end military/DoD simulators, to the new markets associated with
VR ( medical, interactive entertainment, education/training, etc...)

So as not to try and use this news group to make up for lost commercial
advertising time at the VR '92' conference, I suggest anyone interested in
further info on our products and their applications or a copy of the video
presentation shown at the conference, to fax or E-mail me a short data
overview of: who you are, your affiliations, your product offerings, and
possible applications for our CIG technology.
