"Virtual" VR System Needed

I am currently researching the neural mechanisms underlying
conceptualization, and now need to test my views within a working
system.

I intend to simulate these mechanisms in a synthetic "creature", and
observe its behaviour within an artificial environment. The creature
will need to move around within a (limited) environment, and be able
to see and touch simple objects (cubes, pyramids etc) within this
world.

It seems to me that a modified Virtual Reality system would be idealy
suited to my purpose. I would obviously need to modify the software so
that the perceptual inputs normally directed to the human participant,
become the "perceptual" inputs to my creature (ie. both visual and
tactile perceptions).

So I am seeking a (simple) VR system, preferably in C++ (but other
languages will do) which has both VR vision and touch facilities. My
system preferences are Silicon Graphics, X11, Motif, C or C++, but
obviously other systems can be converted - the architecture and
algorithms are more important.

Could anyone please help me to locate such a system. Thanks in advance.
