The university of bath has something about Virtual Manufacturing:
check out http://www.ac.bath.uk/~ensrit/vman.html and be patient !
(they have a couple of papers)

There's also a book (VR for Engineering) which talk about an experiment
with a glove and a desktop based machine for Design for Manufacturing.

There's also a commercial application available from Deneb Robotics which
allow you to simulate Robots (off-line programming) Lathes, Mills...

[The VR for Engineering Book is: Virtual Reality in Engineering, 1993,
edited by Kevin Warwick, John Gray and Davide Roberts, published by
IEE, London, UK. The Chapter mentioned is "Design by Manufacture
Simulation Using Glove Input", pp. 91-103.
