Hi Jon,

I'm not an expert in this branch of the field but here's what
I think. Think of a roller coaster ride. Even if it's a totally
natural situation where there is no conflict among your different
senses (sight, inner ear canals,...), you will indeed get motion
sickness. So motion sickness is not just a new fact that appeared with
virtual reality applications. To me, there is "natural motion
sickness" and "artificial one". The last being caused by some VR
devices, especially the VR helmet. In a roller coaster ride, at
first, if you never made a trip in one of those, you will feel a much
stronger motion sickness due to your fear of the unknown. Then,
gradually, as you begin to "get the idea" of what it is, you will feel
more confident and the motion sickness will diminish. Still, it wont
completely disappear. So, I guess you could say that, in a certain
limited extent, you can "teach" yourself how to minimize the effect of
motion sickness on you when immersed but the phenomenon will persist.

I'm sure that Eugenia M. Kolasinski, which made a doctorate
study on motion sickness could tell you more and even correct me on
this :-)

Regards
