Santa Cruz, California -- DIVE Labs announced today that it will
demonstrate its AmberGL virtual reality development system at the
upcoming meeting of the Virtual Reality Education Foundation (also
known as VeRGe) and distribute a shareware version of the software
form its World Wide Web site.

DIVE Labs' AmberGL software, a virtual environment development system
for OpenGL platforms, was originally developed for use high end
military simulations. AmberGL is a fully featured virtual environment
development system which currently supports OpenGL under Windows NT,
and IRIX, as well as a real-time server implementation. The software
also supports head tracking head mounted displays, spatial audio,
advanced graphics accelerators, reads both VRML and NFF object files,
and allows for the development of distributed virtual environments
using a client server architecture over TCP/IP networks. Future
versions of Amber will support the the recently announced Creative
Labs 3DBlaster and run under DOS, Windows 3.1, and Windows95.

According to Peter Rothman, President of DIVE Laboratories, "AmberGL
represents the culmination of our work for the past three years on a
variety of projects for the military brought down to a consumer level.
The beta version of the AmberGL will be made available as shareware
free of charge from DIVE Labs World Wide Web site
(http://www.divelabs.com) starting September 1st. A commercial
version of the product will be available directly from DIVE Labs and
from select retailers for $149.

Unlike other existing virtual reality tool kits, AmberGL is a true
object oriented environment which supports inheritance and other
object oriented programming. Using Virtual I/O's i-glasses and DIVE
Labs server software developers can create immersive on-line
environments for entertainment, conferencing, or other business
applications. AmberGL environments support communication between
participants and complex interactions with virtual objects via a
protocol originally developed for military simulation. This protocol,
known as the Virtual Environment Transfer Protocol or VETP, is derived
from the well known DIS protocol used in networked military simulators
and is employed in DIVE Labs high end infantry training systems.

AmberGL will be demonstrated on September 30th at 7:30 PM at the
meeting of the San Francisco based Virtual Reality Education
Foundation (known as VeRGe) which has been called the Homebrew
Computing Club of the nineties. During the demonstration, a VRML
Browser will be constructed "live on stage" to demonstrate the ease of
use of AmberGL. Additionally, a multi-person virtual environment will
be demonstrated in which the participants enter a shared environment
through a World Wide Web gateway. The meeting will be held at the
McBean Theater located in the Exploratorium at the San Francisco
Palace of Fine Arts.
