HCI'96 will be the premier European Human-Computer Interaction forum
in 1996, and this year will be held in London, at Imperial College of
Science, Technology and Medicine. As one of the leading science and
engineering institutions in the world, and running joint courses with
The Royal Colleges of Art and Music, this is an ideal host for the
multidisciplinary convergence we are now witnessing in the design and
use of interactive technology.

THE ANNUAL HCI CONFERENCE brings together researchers and
practitioners, from both industry and the academic community, who are
working to improve the effectiveness of the computer as a tool and
creative medium. The conference is a major international forum for the
people-oriented disciplines of human factors, psychology, ergonomics,
sociology and organisational theory, the computer-oriented disciplines
of software engineering, systems analysis and project management, and
increasingly, the arts, graphic design, interactive media and the
internet.

INDUSTRY DAY In order to improve the support which HCI'96
provides to user interface designers in industry, much of Day 1
will be devoted to the challenges of promoting user-centred design
in organisations. The day will include a keynote address
by an invited speaker, panel discussions and technical
presentations by and for practitioners, organisational overviews,
and an exhibition of usability design methods and technologies.

THE HCI CONFERENCE SERIES is organised by the British HCI Group, a
Specialist Group of the British Computer Society. The conference
proceedings will be published by Cambridge University Press.
Submissions other than technical papers will be collated as an
Adjunct Proceedings (ISSN listed), and distributed at the
conference.

                       ____________________________

                      INDUSTRY DAY - 21 August, 1996

In so many technologies the impetus of "technology push" is
giving way to "application pull". The new industrial emphasis is
moving towards "content driven" development. Many of the recent
global partnerships represent a marriage between form and content,
between advanced communication, technology and media content.

In this content-driven industrial agenda, the user interface
assumes a new importance. Industry R&D is seeking to create new
interface solutions to cope with many challenges including new
applications, new media forms, great multiplicity of choices and
increased information overload for the user.

INDUSTRY DAY will provide an opportunity for industry to present
leading examples of this innovative effort and to compare notes
with academic colleagues. It will also serve to resource software
usability professionals in addressing the challenges of promoting
user-centred design in organisations:

- How do you get resources for usability testing?
- What user interface design methods and tools are around?
- How have you introduced usability into your company?
- Where do you turn for HCI advice?

INDUSTRY DAY will be an opportunity to intensively network with
other interface designers, share ideas, discuss practical methods
and tools, and explore potential collaborations between industry
and academia.

INDUSTRY DAY will include:

- A keynote talk by an invited speaker

- Panel discussions (see submission guidelines for Panels)

- Technical presentations by and for practitioners (e.g. adaptations
of mainstream tools and methods; getting usability into IT
development cycles; changing IT design culture).
Presentations will be 20min plus 10min questions.
There are no specific guidelines on the format of papers.

- Commercial organisational overviews
(see submission guidelines for Organisational Overviews )

- An exhibition of usability design methods and technologies

- Opportunities for greater collaboration between researchers
and practitioners (please submit entries for the 'I-D Directory',
  e.g. HCI jobs for graduates; companies seeking academic input;
academic researchers seeking sites for industrial field =

studies...)

You may also wish to attend HCI'96 Tutorials on aspects of usability
and interface design to be held on the previous day.

Industry Day is very much an experiment, conceived in response to
feedback from previous HCI Conferences. Its success depends on
meeting the needs of practitioners, so if you know what you'd like
to see, get in touch soon and make it happen!

Concerned about the questions you'll get in your viva?
Looking for a new direction in your research?

The doctoral workshop at HCI'96 will provide a forum to discuss
your ideas and get immediate feedback from a panel of experts in
the field. The workshop will take place on Tuesday 20th August.
Each participant (including the panelists) will begin with a twenty
minute presentation about their PhD research. This should provide
ample time to discuss the problems and promise of your work.

You should submit a brief summary of your research to date.
This should not exceed five A4 sides. You should also provide a
covering letter that provides the starting date of your PhD work
as well as your supervisor's contact details.

ORGANISATIONAL OVERVIEWS

HCI research groups in universities or research institutions, HCI
consultants for software developers, large user organisations or
government departments, and software product design teams can
introduce themselves to the wider HCI community in an
Organisational Overview. You can tell HCI'96 delegates how your
group came into existence, how it operates, its past and current
work, and -- most importantly -- present the 'big picture' of what
your group is trying to do now and hopes to do in the near future.

A 2 page summary should be submitted. Accepted overviews will be
published in the Adjunct Proceedings to be distributed at the
conference, with a 20 minute presentation and discussion in one of
the special Organisation Overview sessions.

Industrial submissions are strongly encouraged, especially from
large user organisations. These Organisational Overviews will be
presented on Industry=00=00=00=00=00=00=13=DCgust 21st).
