An old friend of mine named Leonard Lombardo has a method patent on a
microphone set designed for "binaural" 3D stereo sound recording. He
manufactures them himself. The pair of sub-miniature pick-ups (about the
size of the tip of a little finger) attach to the earpieces of the user's
glasses. The actual sensor hangs down slightly from the spectacle frame
just in front of the recordist's ear's pinnae. The black wires hang down
the back of the neck and the whole assembly looks like a normal retaining
string for glasses. The unobtrusive appearance makes them ideal for
clandestine recording (Grateful Dead [sigh] fans are among his most loyal
customers).

Leonard is an audiophile-perfectionist of the first order. His mics
are little gems. They are very sensitive with an extraordinary dynamic
range. The frequency response is very flat and he matches the gain of
the "standard" individual mics in each set +/- 1 db. A "signature"
model is available where each mic in the pair is gain and phase
matched +/- 0.25 db (almost perfect phase matching gives the best 3d
acoustic image). He can supply any kind of plug, a phantom power
supply for recorders lacking mic power out, balanced or unbalanced
output, etc. He also makes a superb matched sub-miniature preamp for
line level output.

The perceived quality of the recorded sound is remarkable. These mics are
true professional instruments comparable to the very expensive Sennheiser
"heads" (I forget the German name for the faux heads). These mics give
excellent results when played back through speakers, maintaining the
psycho-acoustic space without headphones.

Leonard is something of a "net-phobe" so he has no e-mail address and no
web page. His info:

If you really want to e-mail me, go ahead and I will forward.

I have no financial interest in the above.
