                RESEARCH ASSISTANT POSITIONS OPEN
===========================================================================

                    MultiMedia Laboratory (MML)
                  Department of Computer Science
                       University of Zurich
                          Switzerland

The MultiMedia Laboratory is part of the Department of Computer
Science of the University of Zurich and is located in Zurich,
Switzerland. The Department encompasses 10 research groups with
about 80 researchers actively involved in various research topics. To
find out more about the MML or the Department of Computer
Science, you might have a look at the following web pages:

Sorry, the pages are still under construction :-)

The MultiMedia Lab currently has three positions open for Research
Assistants (Ph. D. Students) in Computer Science.

Position 1: Research Assistant for 3D Object Reconstruction from Tomography
Data
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This position is responsible for the development of a software
package which can reconstruct 3D objects from digitized
tomography scan data. The main research interest of this project lies
in the development of new techniques for removing or suppressing
3D artefacts. Research areas are 3D printing, artefact suppression,
image processing, and computer-assisted surgery. This is a full-time
position on the basis of a 3-years contract. Gross salary is about
sFr. 50000/year.

Position 2: Ph. D. Position for Stereolithographic Hardcopy Reconstruction
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This position is responsible for the development of software tools to
reconstruct threedimensional objects using the technique of
stereolithography. The main research interest of this project are the
development of new algorithms, data structures and procedures for
the reconstruction of the 3D objects. This is a full-time position on
the basis of a 2-years contract with possible continuation for two
more years. Gross salary is about sFr. 27000/year.

Position 3: Ph. D. Position for High Quality 3D Text
----------------------------------------------------
This position is responsible to develop software tools for very high
quality font rendering in three-dimensional environments. In 3D,
fonts can be in any position, have arbitrary slant and rotation, and
can be perspectively distorted. Because of the low to medium
resolution of current displays, a high quality font rendering is a
prerequisite for a more natural perception of virtual reality scenes. In
this project, new ways to model 3D fonts have to be found and
appropriate algorithms for fast rendering have to be developed. This
is a full-time position on the basis of a 2-years contract with possible
continuation for two more years. Gross salary is about sFr.
27000/year.

Work language is German or English. Additional duties include
general assistance at the department, i.e. teaching assistance,
system management, etc. This will make up about 10% of the work
time which is 42.5 hours/week.

The Department of Computer Science operates a highly
sophisticated computing environment with various SGI, SUN
SPARCstation, IBM RS 6000, HP 700, Macintosh, and PC
computers. The MML further includes a fully featured Virtual Reality
testbed, a sound lab, a 3D stereolithography apparatus, access to
computer tomographs, etc.

To apply for any of these positions, you should have
- an excellent degree in Computer Science or equivalent (MSc, Dipl.
Inform., Dipl.-Ing., etc.)
- interest and qualification to complete a Ph.D. study
- willingness and ability to rapidly learn new topics
- very good programming skills preferably in C or C++
- very good communication skills

The Department is an equal opportunity employer and especially
encourages women to apply.

If you need further information, you can contact Prof. Dr. P. Stucki
