i was informed by ben discoe(sp?) at sense8 that "if that were
possible sense8 would have PROVIDED such a function!", sorry i was
just asking.  so much for fast, friendly support.

low and behold in Glassner's Graphics Gems there is an article on
doing just that.  not sure what volume of Graphics Gems.
unfortunately i had already implemented a work around before finding
the article.
