I'm forwarding this to the list for Dr Fisher.... sounds like a pretty
interesting device to me. I've heard of simple (!) laser scanners
which can be used to digitise 3D objects (e.g. Zyda & Pratt did this
for NPSNET military vehicles); however, this device can create a full
colour representation, not just return range data....

The Machine Vision Group in the Dept. of Artificial Intelligence
at Univ. of Edinburgh has been developing a hand-held environment
scanner that produces data suitable for VR systems, combining shape
and colour surface descriptions. It is used to scan existing physical
objects and environments to produce descriptions for use in VR
environments. For example, it could scan your office, your coffee cup
or even you (provided you did not want dynamic changes of shape).
