In the Feb. '96 issue of Photonics Spectra magazine is a short article
on a $400k program at U. N. Carolina at Chapel Hill to interface a
scanning probe microscope (which can image the location of individual
atoms and molecules) to a 3-D scene generator and "nanomanipulator"
slaved to a researcher's finger. Includes force feedback as the
substrate is manipulated. Pretty wierd - and useful - stuff. Silicon
Graphics is kicking in half the cost.
