COURSE DESCRIPTION: Sense8's World Up is a completely
integrated development environment for creation of real-time
simulations. Powerful simulations can be created that will
operate on either the PC platform or an SGI Workstation,
with no porting necessary. This tutorial will focus on the
rapid prototyping of an application in World Up, then
exporting the scene graph information for use in the
simulation framework of your choice.
The instructor will take you through the IDE, explaining
the browsers and dialogs used in the development of your
simulation database. With a working knowledge of the tools,
the focus will shift to creation of your simulation database
by importing your previously constructed models and
instantiation of object primitives. We will next explore the
World Up Modeler, where complex geometry can be created and
existing models may be edited.
Now, as the database begins to come together, we will
take an in-depth look at the World Up scene graph. We will
discuss various scene graph issues such as traversal, share
instancing, hierarchical linking, and node manipulation.
World Up inclimulation. Each type has several inherent properties.
We will look next at the properties associated with each
different type, and discuss how to modify them and create
additional properties which can then be used to affect objects
in your simulation.
Now that our database is complete, we will make our
objects come to life by giving them task scripts. We will
discuss the structure of the Basic Script programming
language, examine the process of writing task scripts and
creating advanced tasks. Finally, we will discuss the
process of packaging the finished application for
distribution, and exporting the object database for use in
other simulation API's.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This course will be of interest to
anyone in the real-time simulation or Virtual Reality field.
No prior knowledge or experience is necessary, however a
background in simulation database development, or 3D
graphics programming will assist the process of assimilation
of the concepts presented in this course. The course is
specifically useful to simulation developers (programmers,
modelers, project managers), researchers, and educators.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS TO BE ATTAINED: Persons attending this
course will gain practical knowledge in the following areas:
Importing existing models into World Up, Creating and
editing models, Scene Graph terminology and usage,
utilization of the scripting language, delivering a World Up
application and exporting a scene graph for use by other
programming API's. Persons attending this course will also
receive a CD-ROM which will contain an evaluation copy of
the latest version of World Up, several previously
unavailable demo simulations, and many models and images
which can be used for any purpose. Full course notes will
also be given to all course attendees. Should you decide to
buy World Up, all 1996 IMAGE Conference attendees will
receive a significant discount on the price of the software
subscription.

TUTOR'S VITAE: Jeffrey N. Tench is the training manager for
the Sense8 Corporation. He has been writing code for over 18
years. His background includes a strong foundation in
programming as well as modeling skills which were gained
during three years as a computer aided designer/artist at
two small engineering firms in the Phoenix area. He has been
teaching courses in 3D design and programming for the last
1-1/2 years. Recently Jeffrey joined Sense8 Corporation,
where he is responsible for all customer as well as internal
training programs.
