ATIP95.99 : Conf on Artificial Reality & Tele-Existence

ABSTRACT: The International Conference on Artificial Reality and
Tele-Existence/Conference on Virtual Reality Software and Technology
(ICAT/VRST'95), was held, November 20-22, 1995 in Makuhari Messe, Chiba,
Japan. This is a small conference, with about two dozen papers, but one
that brought together the foremost experts on this technology, with a
natural emphasis on Japanese developments. This report summarizes the
conference.

1.  INTRODUCTION

ICAT (International Conference on Artificial Reality and
Tele-Existence) is Japan's premier VR conference, and its organizing
committee features most of the stars of Japan's VR community. This
year it was held in conjunction with VRST (Virtual Reality Software
and Technology). Besides the scientific endorsement of ACM-SIGCHI,
SICE (Society of Instrument and Control Engineers), and the Japan
Technology Transfer Association, ICAT (and this year's joint
conference with VRST) is sponsored by Nikkei business organization,
publishers (among other things) of a business newspaper, the Nihon
Keizai Shimbun. There was an English Proceedings produced, as well as
a video tape of a few of the presented projects. (ATIP subscribers can
request copies of relevant material.)

Besides joining up with VRST, this year, for the first time, ICAT was held
in combination with both NICOGRAPH, Japan's largest computer graphics
exposition, and its sister expo Multimedia. ICAT/VRST was a very distant
third in terms of size and attendance of that week's events at Makuhari.
