Surely the answer, then, is to come up with a high-quality consumer
HMD for systems like the Nintendo64 and mass-produce the hell out of
the HMD in order to sell it at a low price and prevent bad HMDs from
getting a look-in.

I thought Division were going to market a HMD for <$200 (press release
from about 2 years back) for the N64, but there's been no sign of it
or of a HMD from any other company. They better get a move on! The N64
and M2 are going to create a high demand for such HMDs from kids the
world over.  There are already posts on the game newsgroups from
people wanting to know how they can hack naff PC-based HMDs for use
with the new console systems.
