interested in the workshop and please accept our apologies if you
receive this call more than once.

	      BIELEFELD GESTURE WORKSHOP SEPTEMBER 1997

An interdisciplinary event for those researching gesture-based
interfaces and who want to meet and and exchange ideas accross
			     disciplines.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this workshop is to provide an interdisciplinary forum
for researchers working on gesture-based interfaces, gestural
interaction, and sign-language. Under the focus of Human-computer
interfaces, the workshop will encompass all aspects of gestural
interaction, including (but not restricted to):

 o what are gestures?
o what do gestures convey about intentions?
o appropriateness of gestures and interfaces
 o multimedia user interfaces
 o the segmentation problem
 o gesture semantics
o gesture-based interaction for interfaces and applications
 o sign-language recognition
 o gesture and speech integration
o techniques and algorithms for gesture recognition and segmentation

Proceedings of the work presented at the workshop will be
published and made available to both those attending the workshop and
others.

This workshop will be run in the lines of the Gesture Workshop '96 at
the University of York, held by Philip Harling and Alistair Edwards in
March 1996.

ABOUT THE VENUE

The workshop will be held in Bielefeld on or near the campus of the
university. Bielefeld (~300 000 habitants) is located in North Germany
on the flanks of the wooded hills of the Teutoburg Forest. As the
regional center of East Westphalia, Bielefeld is easily reached on an

are Hannover (115 km), Dortmund-Wickede (110 km), Duesseldorf (190 km),
and Frankfurt (320 km). The regional airports Paderborn-Lippstadt (50
km) and Muenster-Osnabuerck (75 km) can be reached by airport shuttles.

non-overlapping sessions sorted by subtopics and allow for plenty of
time for discussions.

Please also let us know that you will be attending by filling in the
form at
the end of this message or by e-mailing us.

We would like to stress that we are interested in submissions of work
that is currently in progress, regardless of the stage of the
work. Also we would like to stress that this workshop is intended as
an interdisciplinary event.
