"Osmose" is a fully immersive Virtual Reality environment created at
SOFTIMAGE by Char Davies, with graphics by Georges Mauro,
implementation by John Harrison, and sound by Rick Bidlack and Dorota
Blaszczak.

In contrast to the solid, hard-edged realism of conventional
interactive 3D computer graphics, the visual aesthetic of Osmose is
soft, luminous, and semi-transparent. Movement through the various
world-spaces in Osmose is designed to be gentle and calming, based on
the breathing and balance of the participant. The sound is also
gentle, based on samples of two human voices. The environment is
designed to be evocative rather than illustrative, and demonstrates
the possibilities for alternate aesthetics in virtual spaces.

Thousands of people have experienced Osmose in the head mounted
display, and many thousands more have witnessed these journeys on a
large-scale 3D stereo projection. Many of these people have reported
a very emotional reaction to the piece.
