Check out http://www.tmpo.dma.gov:8001/ Thats the US Defense Mapping Agency's (DMA) Terrain Modeling Program Office (TMPO). http://www.dmso.mil/ Thats the Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO) While much of their output is US Govt only, they and the other DIS folks are doing a LOT of ground breaking work on terrain modeling.
