I am organizing a panel for SIGGRAPH 96 entitled "The Future of VR:
Head-Mounted Displays Versus Spatially Immersive Displays." Panelists
include David Bennett of Alternate Realities, Mark Bolas of Fakespace,
Steve Bryson of NASA Ames Research Center, Bertrand de LA CHAPELLE of
VIRTOOLS, and David Zeltzer of MIT Research Lab of Electronics.

I would like to hear YOUR input on this topic: Spatially Immersive
Displays (SID's) are immersive projected displays including the CAVE
and domed projection environments which promise to challenge the HMD's
role in VR display. The CAVE utilizes rectilinear immersion while
domed projection systems have been employed for many years in tactical
jet flight simulators. SGI's "Reality Centre" uses a panoramic
projection screen. Greater resolution is achieved by "mosaicking"
multiple video projectors together to form a single display with wide
field-of-view.

SID's offer potential advantages over HMD's including collaborative
group viewing, simultaneous high resolution and wide field-of-view, no
cumbersome headgear, and low viewer fatigue. This panel will compare
the ultimate utility of HMD's and SID's in various VR applications
including issues of user mobility, single and multi-user
interactivity, stereoscopic viewing, applicability to augmented
reality, visual quality, viewer fatigue, and sense of presence.

Feel free to address this panel now. Discussion on this thread will
influence the direction of our panel. Also, if you have relevant
research data or information feel free to email or snail mail it to my
address below. Thanks.
