We are working on something like that-- not really for MUDs,, but,
more general, for any type of communication between a number of
internet users. We have already implemented a IRC-like chat and a
whiteboard applet (or, Commlet, as we call them).  This could very
easily be used to put something on top.

There is also more info available.  We encourage everyone to implement
commlets to run under our system. The programming interface is very
easy.
